Homemade All Natural Chapstick
I am a chapstick-o-holic! If I don’t have my chapstick on me, my day is ruined! I have tubes stashed all around our house, and multiple backups in my purse. There is a reason for that though, and it is not the harsh weather.
I have sensitive skin. When I was younger, a rash broke out around my mouth, and I tried EVERY store bought product to calm and get rid of it. I had this one product (can’t remember the name of it) that was pure white and powdery. When I applied to and around my lips, it made it look like I had just eaten powdered donuts, and didn’t wipe my mouth. It was pretty embarrassing to walk around with that on my mouth all day. But I was desperate.
I ended up at the doctors and they prescribed something that didn’t help. The doctor said I had an allergic reaction to acidic food, like ketchup and spaghetti, because of the tomato. The rash eventually went away on its own, but every once in a while, when my lips get chapped, I feel like it is coming back. BUT I eat tomatoes all the time, and it has never come back in the way I had it. I probably had a bad reaction to ALL THE PRODUCTS I was buying and trying now that I think about it.
Benefits of Coconut Oil in Chapstick
Coconut oil has extremely moisturizing effects, which makes it ideal for chapped lips. Your lips are sensitive to moisture loss, because the skin is so thin. Your lips get exposed to the elements more than any part of your skin. Mixing coconut oil in to make an all natural chapstick helps get the benefits, plus so much more.
Homemade Chapstick Saves Money
I used to spend SO much money on chapstick it was insane. I spent about $3.50 per tube, and man if I lost it, that was money lost!
Making chapstick is what got me into making all my homemade products. Once I learned that I could do it, and how easy it was, I started looking into making different products.
I have been perfecting my products for years, seeing what does and doesn’t work, and I am finally ready to share what I have created!
This is literally THE BEST DIY All Natural chapstick recipe hands down! It is easy and doesn’t take long at all. Follow me as I give you a step by step of the process.
It took me a while to come up with a recipe that worked and I like. I felt like a chemist in the kitchen for the longest time, experimenting with the different ingredients. The first ever batch I made, I used TOO MUCH coconut oil, and the chapstick was too soft. The second time, I added TOO MUCH beeswax, and the chapstick was too hard.
Let’s start with the ingredients:
- 2 Tbsp Coconut Oil (Buy Here)
- 3 Tbsp Bees Wax (Buy Here)
- 1/4 Cup Sunflower Oil (Buy Here)
- 1/4 Tsp Vitamin E Oil (Buy Here)
- 1/8 Tsp Lanolin (Buy Here)
- 2 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil (Buy Here)
- 12 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil (Buy Here)
- Chapstick Containers (Buy Here)
Step 1: Measure out the bees wax, coconut oil, and place in double boiler. Melt them down to a liquid. The beeswax will take longer to melt. I also like to use the bees wax pellets, but you can also get the bars, and it works just as well. Once it is a melted liquid, add your sunflower oil, vitamin E oil, and Lanolin. Mix it all together.
Step 2: Add your essential oils, and mix it some more. You can test it out to see if it has the flavoring you want. Let a little bit of it cool on your finger, and rub it on your lips. If you think it needs more mint or other flavorings, add more.
Step 3: Using a dropper, or measuring cup, add the melted liquid into the chapstick tubes. I like to use a small measuring cup, because it goes faster, but is a bit more messier. Using a small dropper is cleaner, but is more time consuming. If the mixture starts to harden before you are done, you can melt it over the stove again, or even stick it in the microwave to melt.
Let the chapstick tubes cool, place the caps on each one, and BAM! you are all done! This recipe usually makes about 20 chapsticks for me, and these last me forever!
